I CAN Children’s Summit, Dubai, Dec 18 - 20

In November 2019, DFC held its first I CAN Children’s Global Summit in Rome! This was an event that combined our annual BTC celebration together with an audience with the Pope, the I CAN Marketplace and a number of inspiring events for changemakers from around the world! Watch the video to be inspired by some of the event highlights!

This year, DFC Dubai is hosting the I CAN Children’s Summit. Due to the impact of the pandemic and COVID regulations, this is an opportunity for those who are able to attend in line with regulations in their respective countries.  Only learners ( 12 - 17 years) who have utilised FIDS to drive change projects in 2020/2021 are eligible to present at the I CAN Children’s Summit in Dubai.
How can you empower changemakers to join the I CAN Children's Summit?

A: Submit a student-led story of change online
1. Use the One Week Challenge Toolkit (for learners at school) OR the Do Good From Home Toolkit (for learners still learning from home) to enable a group of 3 - 5 learners (12 - 17 years) to identify an issue affecting them, ideate a solution, implement an action plan and share their story of change. See example of previous stories here. You could also use our FIDS framework to share a change project that your learners/children have already implemented. As long as the project was child-led and adult-supported and you can use FIDS to tell the story, it will be considered for entry!

2. Submit the story of change on the DFC Global platform - https://challenge.dfcworld.org/ by Oct 31st. Only one team ( 2 - 5 learners) will represent their country and present their story of change.

B: Prepare for the event in Dubai
1. Download and read the I CAN! Children’s Summit Dubai 2021 Brochure provided by the DFC Dubai team with regards to the programme, visa, accomodation, meals, local travel.

2. Alongside the information provided in the brochure, review the estimates below and plan accordingly:

Flights and Visas
Johannesburg - Dubai return, Emirates, $760 per person
Khartoum - Dubai, return, Emirates, $250 per person
2 Week Visitor Visa, $200 per person

Accomodation, Meals and Local Travel
Hostel Accommodation, per night with en-suite, $60  double, $40 single https://www.google.com/travel/hotels/s/uNb91
Meals $20 per person, per meal
Local Transport, Taxi $5 minimum call out, Metro $5 per person, per day
Sightseeing - $20 per person, per activity
Spending $5 per person, per day

Programme Management
$300 per person, Aug - Dec, ensuring successful participation and engagement of learners and adults. This refers only to event coordination and participants will be responsible for making their own flight bookings and travel arrangements.

With these figures in mind it is estimated that in order for 2 learners (in shared double room) and 1 teacher (in single room) at the Youth Hostel (that the DFC Dubai team is working with) from Dec 17 (check in) to Dec 21 (check out), costs will be as follows:

South African Delegates
Learners $1,600
Teacher/Adult $1,640

Sudanese Delegates
Learners $1,090
Teacher/Adult $1,130

2. Names of participants submitted by Oct 31st will avail of the 10% accommodation that DFC Dubai can facilitate with the Youth Hostel.

Please note the following:
- eduSOIL is facilitating participation of delegates from South Africa and Sudan.
- Each country can have a delegation of 10 participants wherein one group of 2 - 4 learners present a story of change and the remaining learners attend as participants.
- Each group of 5 learners must be accompanied by an adult.
- As the hostel accommodation is double, en-suite rooms for learners, we recommend that groups have equal numbers of males and females as follows:

Option 1:  4 females (2 x double rooms) + 1 female teacher ( 1 x single room)
Option 2: 4 females (2 x double rooms) + 1 male teacher ( 1 x single room)
Option 3: 2 females  (1 x single room) + 2 males (1 x single room) with + 1 female teacher (1 x single room) + 1 male teacher (1 x single room)

- Based on the above suggestion, a country delegation of 10 could include:
- 4 learners who will present a story of change
- 4 learners will will participate in the workshops
- 2 teachers

- Travel to Dubai and programme events at the venue, including hostel accommodation will be conducted according to each country's COVID regulations. Teams will be asked to ensure that they have vaccinations, stay in their bubbles during the EXPO and
follow quarantine requirements for return travel to their respective countries.
